Tsunami Relief

Jesuit Tsunami Relief
Chennai, India 2005

Jesuits had been working in Southern India and Sri Lanka for many years prior to the tsunami of 2004. Because of the structures already in place, they were able to become operational in the relief effort within days by forming Jesuit Tsunami Service. Funds poured in from around the world. By accompanying tsunami survivors, living alongside them and sharing their experiences, JTS was able to assist survivors in trauma healing, emergency logistics, health care, and humanitarian protection. JTS also assisted with food distribution, established educational opportunities, and helped rebuild the villagers’ fishing fleets and homes.
